Overview

The Department of English and Modern Languages has been one of the strongest departments of SIBA since its beginning, which boasts the highest number of diplomates of SIBA. The department provides Diplomas in English, French, Chinese, Hindi and Tamil. Apart from the diplomas, the Department of English offers English as a subject for all the Undergraduate Programs SIBA proffers.

All the academics in the department are well qualified and experienced in their relevant language fields and are highly competent at second and foreign language teaching which results in catering to the educational needs of all the students who follow the courses the department offers.


An IT & Communication professional demonstrates competence in technical and computer-related communication, technology, design skills, organizing, management, developing information management systems, designing and delivering corporate training, and developing support systems for consumer products, such as personal finances to complex data management systems and English language skills needed for effective communication of both technical and non-technical information in a range of fields and media and in day-to-day social and professional interaction at corporate level.

By the end of the program the BTech graduates should be able to:
Demonstrate professionalism with the acquired IT and communication competencies in the chosen career and seek career advancement in the computer profession after completing this degree program Use English language skills for effective social interaction, critical thinking and precise expression needed for higher education , business communication and training at corporate level

Higher Diploma in English is a course designed for individuals who are interested in improving their English language skills further. They will be exposed to a rich variety of linguistic content. Students will be taught by a highly qualified panel of academics which will enhance students’ language skills through practical methodology using authentic situations. Higher Diploma is equal to the completion of English as a main subject of the first year in the General Degree at SIBA Campus. The course consists of two parts: Advanced Diploma in English and Higher Diploma in English.

Basic requirements for enrolling on this course are;

  • B pass for Diploma in English at SIBA or Completion of SLQF Level 3 qualification with a B pass from any other recognized institute. Or/and
  • A/L three passes preferably with a B pass for General English

This diploma course was fundamentally developed in order to expand the students’ horizon within the scope of Hindi language. The teaching and learning experience they gain throughout the course will nourish their language proficiency to become a solid communicator in Hindi. The course is divided in to three levels as the basic level, comprehensive level, and the diploma level. In each level students follow modules in Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Initially the course introduces the students to the basic elements of the language and eventually they are exposed to the practical usage of the language which leads them to become an outstanding communicator in Hindi.

Being an official language, it is mandatory for everyone in Sri Lanka to be proficient in Tamil. Diploma in Tamil is designed in a way that starts from the very beginning and eventually be advanced. Completion of this diploma will be a support for professionals to get through the government Tamil exam, school children who follow Tamil as a subject and for those who are interested in becoming translators.
